Mowing turf at appropriate heights and frequencies is a major component of a turf management
plan designed to develop a dense, actively growing, attractive turf.   When mowed too short, turf
can become open, allowing weed invasion such as crabgrass or dandelions also turf mowed too
short often has poorly-developed root systems and reduced rhizome spread, which also
contributes to the development of a thin, open turf. For these reasons, it is important to find the
balance that produces attractive, healthy turf in an efficient manner.

Healthy plants are less susceptible to insect and disease problems.  We can improve the quality of
any landscape or lawn and bring out its true potential.  We offer complete fertilization as well as weed
and insect control services.  Licensed by the state, we use our 30 plus years of experience to assure
you optimal results with the proper application of fertilizer and other products.

Services Offered:

  • Lawn Fertilization
  • Lawn Insect Control
  • Core Aeration
  • Shrub Fertilization
  • Ornamental Bed Weed Control
  • Bio-stimulants and soil conditioners to increase soil microbial activity
  • Plant Growth regulator on banks/slopes to extend time between mowing's

S & A's Vegetation Control Programs can eliminate virtually all types of unwanted vegetation in the
areas you want to keep clean such as :
Fence Lines- if you pay someone to weed-eat grass or weeds along your fence line it is
costing you more than it needs to! We can spray a strip, (approximately 8" to 12" wide) along your
fence line that will eliminate the need for weed-eating and will keep your property looking well kept.
Gravel Parking Lots and Driveways--Keeping weeds under control will keep gravel areas looking
better, longer.  Excessive weed growth will increase the need to re-gravel much sooner than a lot that
is kept weed-free.
Curb Lines--Elimination weeds along curbs and in the cracks of macadam will prolong the life of your
streets and pavement
Roadside Vegetation Control-- You will find it much more cost effective and environmentally friendly
to spray unwanted vegetation than to continually cut it.
Poison Ivy Control--This is a tough weed nobody wants on their property.  S & A offers programs to
rid your property of poison ivy.

Typically, two or three applications a year will keep unwanted vegetation under control.  The number
of applications will vary depending on the following:
  • Your tolerance of the weeds.  That is, if you want S & A to come back as soon as new weeds
emerge, you will have your applications spaced closer together than someone who can live with
some weed growth in between applications.  We are happy to provide the service at whatever
    intervals our customers desire.
  • The weather.  Generally speaking, the more rain, the more weeds.
  • The types of weeds and the abundance of weed seeds in the soil.
Total bare ground vegetation control for Industrial sites.
S & A can also apply pre-emergent weed controls to control weed seeds before they germinate.

Natural - Organic Section

The philosophy of growing turf (or anything else) ecologically is simply that a biologically healthy soil
grows healthy plants. Natural fertilizers contain raw materials meant to stimulate and feed the life in
the soil. The apparent low N-P-K analysis (required by law) has relatively little meaning when you are
feeding the soil because those numbers refer to plant nutrients not soil nutrients. Synthetic fertilizer
ingredients contain very little that will feed the life in the soil. Unfortunately, the benefits of feeding the
soil cannot be quantified or qualified on any fertilizer label.
When you feed soil life, those growing populations of organisms begin to accomplish many tasks that
now consume great amounts of time, money and energy. For example, microorganisms serve to help:

1. Fertilize by fixing nitrogen from the air, mineralizing soil organic nutrients and dissolving mineral
nutrients from rock particles
2. De-thatch, by decomposing thatch and other organic matter into valuable nutrients and humus which
in turn increases the water and nutrient-holding capacity of the soil
3. Provide aeration by encouraging earthworms and biological soil aggregation
4. Control many insect and disease problems by competition, predation, and biological nutrient
management.

These are only four examples, derived from a far greater list. It is widely accepted by ecologists that
most of the benefits we get from soil life have yet to be discovered.

Plant bio-stimulants are materials that promote plant growth. The importance of bio-stimulants lies in
their ability to promote hormonal activity in plants. Plant hormones are chemical communicators, or
agents, which help regulate a plant’s development and its response to its surrounding environment.
Bio-stimulants also promote antioxidant production in plants which, in turn, reduces “free radicals”.
Free radical molecules result from stress such as drought, heat, ultraviolet light and herbicide use.
Free radicals are damaging because they are strong oxidizing agents which damage lipids, proteins
and DNA within plants cells.
Antioxidants are metabolites and enzymes which seek out free radical molecules and protect plants
from damage. They include lipid soluble substances like vitamin "E" and beta-carotene and water
soluble materials such as vitamin C and various enzymes.

Milky Spore
This natural biocontrol provides grub control for Japanese Beetles. One application lasts from 3-5
years. Both adults and larvae can be controlled without the use of chemicals.

SeaLife Kelp Meal
is a soil conditioner made from the seaplant Ascophyllum nodosom, which is harvested from coastal
Maine waters. The live plants are quickly dried at a low temperature to maintain the proper moisture
level for vitamin and amino acid stability.
SeaLife Kelp Meal contains 60 trace minerals and an assortment of amino acids, enzymes, and
alginates that feed and stimulate the necessary microorganisms in your soil. A healthy, active
microbial population will breakdown organic material and improve the quality and texture of the soil.

SeaCrop16 Liquid Plant Growth Regulator
is a concentrated extract made from the seaplant Ascophyllum nodosom, which is harvested from
coastal Maine waters. Agricultural crops around the world have benefited from using kelp extracts for
decades. Extensive research with these extracts has determined that the growth hormone, cytokinin,
coupled with the seaweed's diverse micronutrients, enhance crop growth, development, and yield.
SeaCrop16 is formulated for commercial agriculture to provide the highest concentration (400 ppm) of
natural cytokinin found on the market today.

Mushroom Compost
A nourishing blend of well composted and aged agricultural by-products and Canadian
sphagnum peat moss, screened to a fine and consistent level.  Compost is an economic
organic soil amendment with micro and macronutrients. Applying compost to your  lawn soil
will increase the organic matter content, moisture and oxygen permeability, moisture
retention and will feed the soil food web-enhancing plant growth.
